Hilary Kozel for Spokane School Board.
Every child. Every day. Every way.

Welcome! I’m Hilary Kozel and I’m honored
to serve on the Spokane Public Schools Board of Directors.
Appointed unanimously in 2023, I’m proud to have the sole endorsements in my race by the Spokane Education Association and the Washington Education Association, the unions of dedicated professionals at the heart
of our public schools.

I’m running to retain my seat to continue leading with transparency, collaboration, and a deep belief in the power of public education. I’ll keep championing strong academic growth, advocating for the resources our schools need, and ensuring safe, welcoming environments where students and teachers can thrive. Together, we can strengthen learning that builds connection, belonging, and opportunity for
every student.

About Me

I’m a proud mother, longtime public education advocate and current director on the Spokane Public Schools Board. Since my unanimous appointment in 2023, it’s been an honor to serve our students, educators and community.

Raised in Idaho by two public school educators, I earned a B.S. in Organizational Communications with a minor in Spanish from the University of Idaho (go Vandals!). I spent over a decade in the banking industry before shifting my focus to raising my two children. Both are recent SPS graduates, one from On Track Academy and one from Lewis and Clark High School.

Soon after moving to Spokane I became deeply involved in our schools. I began as a classroom and PTG volunteer at Wilson Elementary, then PTG president at Sacajawea Middle School, parent advisor at On Track Academy, district-wide advisory committee and strategic planning member and now as a board member. I believe every student deserves access to opportunities that fit their unique path and I’m committed to continuing this important work with strong systemic knowledge and leadership skills.

A Family Affair! Campaign fun with my husband and children at the Hillyard Festival.
My Priorities
1
Future-Ready Learning
Every child deserves the tools and support to thrive, from their first day of school to their chosen path after graduation. These dynamic times demand that students have access to strong academic growth, next-step learning opportunities, and the resources to succeed.
2
Belonging & Meaningful Connection
Students learn best when they feel safe, seen, and supported. I’m committed to welcoming schools where everyone feels they belong. We’ve made progress in fostering connections by reducing screen time and strengthening community partnerships. I'll keep moving this work forward.
3
Transparency & Community Partnerships
Transparency, shared accountability, and student-centered decision-making are essential for a thriving public school system. I will continue to lead with an equitable lens and work in partnership with families, educators, and the broader community to steward our public schools with care and integrity.
Service on the Board
Since my appointment to the board in 2023, I’ve been all in. It’s an honor to listen, learn, and lead, whether in board meetings, school visits, equity-centered professional development, or community conversations. I bring experienced leadership, thoughtful communication, and a collaborative approach to every space I enter and every decision I make.

As a legislative representative on the board, I advocate for full and equitable funding from the state legislature, because every student deserves access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive.

School visits and events like "Coffee with SPS" provide important connections
with the community, students, and teachers throughout the school year.
